The boreholes penetrated municipal and industrial waste to a depth of 45 meters. The subsoil, which often varies in composition and consistency, poses particular challenges for conventional drilling methods.
In municipal solid waste, displacement or ramming methods regularly fail: plastics, wood debris, and textile components clog core catchers, tear samples out of context, or cause core loss. STUBORE® uses a cutting drill bit that loosens the material in a controlled manner and captures it in the core catcher. This enables samples to be assigned to specific depths even in highly heterogeneous landfill material. This is an important prerequisite for the reliable identification of filter layers and impermeable zones during subsequent well construction.
The continuous casing stabilized the borehole throughout its entire depth and provided the foundation for the precise installation of the 4″-HDPE filter pipes—without any subsidence or misalignment of the lining components.
The work was carried out in accordance with the safety measures applicable to contaminated areas: continuous forced-air ventilation of the drilling sites, protective suits and ventilated helmets for all personnel, and multi-gas monitoring for CH₄, H₂S, CO₂, and O₂.
